Architect Horatio N. White designed The
Hall of Languages as well as many
landmark buildings in the region.

Professors and students left an imprint on
the building’s interior spaces.

students, from eager young women to

Dedication of the building on May 8, 1873.
In 1873, The Hall of Languages was the
only campus building.

By the 1880’s, the building was
overcrowded with libraries and laboratories.
The building commanded a hilltop view of
Syracuse.

The art was commissioned in 1975 by Syracuse University to raise funds for redevelopment of its original campus building, The Hall of Languages. The
drawings were featured in a special publication detailing the building’s history, from 1873 to 1975. Reconstruction work was completed in 1979.
There are eight graphite drawings, each 18 x 14, from the artist’s collection. Have a question?
